April 30, 2015 - Ottawa, Ontario - Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada
The Honourable Rob Nicholson, P.C., Q.C., M.P. for Niagara Falls, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today met with his Ukrainian counterpart, Pavlo Klimkin. This is the second time the two ministers have met, the first being April 16, 2015, at the Global Conference on Cyberspace in The Hague, Netherlands.
The ministers discussed the ongoing security situation involving Russia. Canada raised concerns about Russia’s violation of the Minsk agreements and reiterated its support for Ukraine. The ministers also discussed the Government of Ukraine’s progress in implementing its economic and bureaucratic reform agenda.
Today, Minister Nicholson announced funding for seven projects valued at $14 million. These projects will strengthen human rights, improve access to justice and give support to civil society in Ukraine. Canada is among the top donors to Ukraine and a leading partner in the areas of advancing democracy, human rights and the rule of law.
“Canada has always been clear: we recognize the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all of Ukraine. Whether it takes five months or 50 years, we will never, ever recognize the illegal Russian occupation of any part of the Ukrainian territory. Russia must immediately withdraw its troops and weapons from sovereign Ukrainian territory and cease its material support of insurgents in eastern Ukraine.”
