The Government of Canada is committed to providing life-saving humanitarian support for those affected by the ongoing crises in Iraq and Syria. To this end, on May 2, 2015, Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced $139 million in additional humanitarian assistance for conflict-affected populations.
The additional assistance will help meet the needs of those affected by the conflicts in Iraq and Syria – including the exodus of refugees to neighbouring countries – by supporting the provision of food, clean water, shelter, sanitation, health care and other basic services, and to address sexual and gender-based violence.
More specifically, $39 million will support humanitarian efforts in Iraq; $19.55 million will support efforts in Syria; $10.65 million will support efforts in Lebanon, and $9.3 million will support efforts in Jordan. The remaining $60.5 million will support various multi-country initiatives.
