Project completed thanks to funding from federal, provincial and local governments
May 8, 2015 – Corner Brook,Newfoundland and Labrador– Infrastructure Canada
The Honourable Rob Moore, Regional Minister for Newfoundland and Labrador and Minister of State (Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency), on behalf of the Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of Infrastructure, Communities and Intergovernmental Affairs and Minister of the Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec, announced the completion of the Corner Brook Water Treatment Plant today. The Honourable Keith Hutchings, Newfoundland Minister of Municipal and Intergovernmental Affairs, and Charles Pender, Mayor of Corner Brook, attended the grand opening of the plant, which is bringing better water treatment services to the City of Corner Brook and the towns of Massey Drive and Mount Moriah.
The approximately $50-million project involved constructing a new water treatment plant, and installing new water transmission and sewer infrastructure to carry residual material from the new treatment plant to the existing sewer system. Work also included building two above-ground storage reservoirs next to the plant to ensure stable water supplies are available to the communities.
The new plant is compliant with the Canadian Drinking Water Quality Guidelines and designed to produce a flow rate of up to 30 million litres per day. It uses ultraviolet and chlorine treatment combined with a Dissolved Air Flotation process that helps eliminate waterborne diseases in the water supply.
Thanks to this important infrastructure investment, the federal, provincial and municipal governments have helped ensure residents of Corner Brook and the surrounding areas have access to high-quality water treatment services and are well protected against fire and other emergencies.
