On May 26, 2015, Matthew Hines, an inmate from the medium security unit at Dorchester Penitentiary was found in need of medical attention.
Staff members immediately began performing CPR and emergency services were called. The offender was taken to the Moncton Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 00:02.
At the time of his death, Mr. Hines, 33 years old, had been serving a sentence of five years, since October 18, 2010 for Robbery, Mischief in Relation to Other Property, Possession of Property Obtained by crime, Failing to comply, Disguise with intent and Theft under 5 000$.
The inmate’s next of kin have been notified of his death.
As in all cases involving the death of an inmate, the police and the coroner have been notified, and Correctional Service Canada will review the circumstances of the incident.
