Ottawa - This week, Defence Minister Jason Kenney joined Prime Minister Stephen Harper and a Government of Canada delegation for a series of remarkable and poignant events commemorating the 70th anniversary of the Liberation of the Netherlands and Victory in Europe at the end of the Second World War.
Among these were ceremonies of remembrance at the Groesbeek and Holten Canadian War Cemeteries. Minister Kenney also attended the Wageningen National Commemoration Capitulations 1945 and Liberation festivities and parade, a celebratory reminder of the deep and enduring connection the Dutch feel toward their Canadian liberators.
Minister Kenney also visited Kamp Westerbork, a former Nazi transit camp, with Mrs. Laureen Harper, a few of the Canadian veterans who liberated it, and Dutch Holocaust survivors.
