May 26, 2015 – Montreal – National Film Board of Canada
The fifth instalment of Do Not Track, the interactive web documentary series conceived and directed by documentary filmmaker Brett Gaylor, goes online at noon on May 26 at donottrack-doc.com. Entitled Big Data: Inside the Algorithm, the episode is co-directed by author and media technologies expert Sandra Rodriguez and Akufen, a creative studio specializing in interactive design and web production whose projects include the NFB webdoc A Journal of Insomnia.
Big Data: Inside the Algorithm, which is also written by Rodriguez, reveals the world of big data: an astronomical quantity of information that may or may not be used against us. But who understands the language that data speaks? And how do they interpret it into profits? With access to information that has been collected since the interactive project began and cross-checked with other databases, users will discover the algorithmic interpretation game, its power, its dangers... and its absurdity. Includes interviews with danah boyd, founder and president of the Data & Society Research Institute; Kate Crawford, principal researcher at Microsoft Research; and Alicia Garza, co-founder of #BlackLivesMatter.
