Grand total of infrastructure investments announced:
Specific projects to be highlighted:
Fort Anne National Historic Site (NHS)
Fort Anne Administrative and Maintenance Building Rehabilitation
Improve efficiency of the buildings that house administration and asset management for southwest Nova through upgrades and refurbishments to existing structures.
Fort Anne NHS - Embankment and Wall Stabilization
This project involves stabilization of wharf structure remains and breakwater that are failing due to coastal erosion.
Garrison Graveyard Stabilization
The Garrison Graveyard at Fort Anne NHS is a significant feature of the site and is a cultural resource related to the reasons for designation. This project will ensure the repair and stabilization of the various elements of the graveyard including the cast iron fence, the landscape and the stones. Parks Canada has undertaken much work in the past decade to improve the condition of the graveyard through the development of a conservation plan. The current proposal will review completed and outstanding work and any new conservation issues to establish priorities and timelines for graveyard conservation going forward.
Officers’ Quarters Rehabilitation
Parks Canada will undertake a complete design and implementation of a new signature experiential offer at Fort Anne NHS.
Fort Anne is Canada's oldest national historic site – a present-day reminder of a time when conflict between Europe's empire builders took place right on the shores of the Annapolis River. Offering a sweeping view of the beautiful Annapolis Basin, from the centre of Annapolis Royal, museum exhibits highlight the history of the fort.
Fort Anne will be celebrating its 100th anniversary as the oldest national historic site in Canada. Celebrations will happen alongside the anniversary of all national historic sites in the Parks Canada system and as part of the Road to 2017 commemorations.
Port-Royal National Historic Site (NHS)
Port-Royal NHS – Detailed Assessment and Stabilization
Port-Royal NHS consists of a number of historic and contemporary assets which include the Habitation, parking lot and washroom building as well as support structures (e.g. maintenance building). The objective of this project is a complete assessment and stabilization of site elements, particularly the walls, roof and windows of the Habitation, which have issues with rot, and the parking lot and washroom buildings, the maintenance building, which are aging infrastructure in need of renovation. This project supports plans to celebrate the site’s 75th anniversary in 2016. Showcasing the work as an investment in Canada’s national historic sites. It will also contribute to the Agency’s Road to 2017 programming related to the theme of nation-building. Commemorating Fort Anne NHS’s 100th anniversary in 2017 and celebrating Port-Royal’s 75th anniversary highlight the Government of Canada’s role in ensuring the recognition and preservation of Canada’s history.
This national historic site features a reconstruction of early 17th– century buildings representing the former French colony who settled for a time along the Nova Scotia coast. Costumed interpreters and period demonstrations help recreate the look and feel of Port-Royal, one of the earliest settlements in North America. Visitors can also take in the panoramic view of the Annapolis River and Basin.
