Project made possible thanks to the federal New Building Canada Plan
May 11, 2015 – Miramichi, New Brunswick – Infrastructure Canada
Tilly O'Neill Gordon, Member of Parliament for Miramichi, on behalf of the Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of Infrastructure, Communities and Intergovernmental Affairs and Minister of the Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec, was joined today by the Honourable Rob Moore, Regional Minister for New Brunswick and Minister of State (Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency), the Honourable Roger Melanson, New Brunswick Minister of Finance and Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure, the Honourable Bill Fraser, New Brunswick Minister of Tourism, Heritage and Culture and Minister responsible for the Northern and Miramichi Funds, and Gerry Cormier, Mayor of Miramichi to announce that the Government of Canada has identified the rehabilitation of the Centennial Bridge for funding of up to $38.6 million under the New Building Canada Plan.
The project will be carried out over the next nine years and involves safeguarding the bridge's structural integrity, increasing load capacity, and bringing the roadway up to current design standards.
This work will extend the bridge's lifespan by another 50 to 60 years and significantly improve driver safety in the Miramichi area while supporting job creation and economic growth throughout the region.
The New Building Canada Plan is the largest and longest federal infrastructure plan in Canada's history.
This unprecedented commitment is providing $53 billion to support provincial, territorial and municipal infrastructure between 2014 and 2024.
Over this ten-year period, New Brunswick will benefit from approximately $866 million in dedicated federal funding, including almost $394 million under the New Building Canada Fund.
