Local partnerships lead to unique visitor experiences
May 15, 2015 – Cape Breton, Nova Scotia – Parks Canada
The Honourable Peter MacKay, Regional Minister for Nova Scotia, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, on behalf of the Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, Minister of the Environment and Minister responsible for Parks Canada, today highlighted new and innovative experiences for the upcoming visitor season at Parks Canada sites on Cape Breton Island and in Canso.
Together with Destination Cape Breton Association, Parks Canada is launching compelling new visitor experiences that highlight creative partnerships within the local and regional tourism and business communities, including:
- Bells of Baddeck: Created by Lorna MacDonald and with the support of Parks Canada and other partners, this new music-drama tells the story of Mabel and Alexander Graham Bell, the great inventor, who came to Cape Breton and fell in love with its people, music, and Gaelic charm. Running from July 3 – August 2 at Alexander Graham Bell National Historic Site.
- Rum, the Drink that Sugar Made: An enhanced historic rum tasting, with special edition FortressTM Rum, tells the story of Louisbourg’s role in New France’s 18th century rum trade. Visitors learn how rum is made while savouring a sample at the Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site.
- Cape Breton Highlands National Park now offers more comfort camping options, with the introduction of 10 oTENTiks in 2015. oTENTiks are a cross between a tent and a rustic cabin. This is a great way for families, couples and groups to experience the great Canadian tradition of camping, with a bit more comfort.
Parks Canada is featuring more of what visitors love, making 2015 the perfect time to connect with these special places on Cape Breton Island and in Canso. Whether it is comfort camping in the great outdoors, discovering Cape Breton talent at a national historic site or enjoying an authentic rum experience at the Fortress of Louisbourg, visitors will be making memories and making plans to return again next year.
Parks Canada is proud to support Canada's National Conservation Plan by taking concrete action to connect Canadians to nature. In addition to new and enhanced programming, Parks Canada will continue to deliver events and activities that yielded positive results in 2014 including Learn-to Camp, Red Chair Challenge, White Glove Tour and special events like CultureFête and SuperFête.
