Revitalized defence infrastructure across Canada will provide the Canadian Armed Forces with the facilities they need to provide support to troops and military families, to support the Reserve forces, to support operations home and abroad, and to ensure the health and safety of our men and women in uniform.
In 1916, Canadian Forces Borden was established as Camp Borden. Since that time, the base has grown significantly and now consists of 21,000 acres of land and approximately 460 buildings. Maintaining modern and efficient infrastructure at CFB Borden is a key to successful operations. Beginning in 2015, three infrastructure projects will repair and improve military housing units, military quarters and construct a new Ammunition Transit Facility.
The Canadian Forces Ammunition Depot, located just outside of CFB Borden, in Angus Ontario, has recently become the primary location for “stock-mounting” for deployed military operations. Currently, ammunition staging, inspection and distribution are handled in two separate buildings, which do not provide adequate space. Construction of a new, much larger Ammunition Transit Facility will begin in 2015. This facility will provide the ability to process inbound and outbound shipments of ammunition simultaneously and will ensure that the depot maintains rapid response capability. This project will receive $12.5 million in funding from the recent federal infrastructure investments for defence facilities.
The majority of residential housing units within DND’s portfolio were built between
1948 and 1960 and some of them need to be renovated to meet contemporary standards. These projects will not only improve the portfolio but also the quality of life of Canadian Armed Forces members.
At CFB Borden, a project to renovate and recapitalize military housing units, with a value of $ 6 million, will begin in Spring 2015. The scope of these renovations includes required and overdue life cycle work on insulation, electrical, plumbing and heating systems as well as updates to these systems and to current standards where required. A recapitalization, or whole house renovation, includes the replacement of an RHU’s system, including plumbing, electrical, and heating, kitchen and bathroom renovations, and changes to the overall interior layout to improve the functionality of the unit. Exterior retrofits include the replacement of an RHU’s siding, windows, and exterior doors, along with increased insulation.
This project to upgrade military quarters at CFB Borden will see a number of improvements to ventilation systems, building climate controls, plumbing upgrades, fire alarm upgrades and boiler replacements. This project valued at $4 million, will be completed by 2017.
