May 29, 2015 - Hamilton, Ontario - Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada
The Honourable Bal Gosal, Minister of State (Sport), today announced support for UNICEF Canada’s #HighFiveIt campaign, which will raise funds to help save children’s lives in Haiti. Minister Gosal made the announcement during halftime at the Canada versus England international exhibition soccer match in Hamilton, Ontario, in the lead-up to the Women’s World Cup.
The #HighFiveIt mass media campaign, which launched with an attempt to break the world record for the most people giving high-fives at one time, aims to raise funds for maternal, newborn and child health initiatives in Haiti. The funds raised will help to treat severe and acute malnutrition, provide vaccinations, and improve access to clean water to help prevent potential cholera outbreaks in Haiti.
Every virtual high-five represents a commitment to save children’s lives through a $5 donation to UNICEF Canada. The Government of Canada will contribute an amount equal to what UNICEF Canada raises, up to a maximum of $1 million.
“As a global community, we must rise to the challenge of ending the preventable deaths of women and children within a generation. With UNICEF Canada’s #HighFiveIt campaign we are doing just that. I am proud that the Government of Canada is a part of this innovative campaign, which is harnessing the power of sport, partnership and innovation to save women’s and children’s lives. I encourage all Canadians to support UNICEF Canada’s #HighFiveIt campaign to help save the lives of children in Haiti.”
