May 29, 2015 - Ottawa, Ontario - Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada
The Honourable Rob Nicholson, P.C., Q.C., M.P. for Niagara Falls, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today announced the appointment of the Honourable Gregory Francis Thompson, P.C., to the Roosevelt Campobello International Park Commission (RCIPC).
The RCIPC was established under the Canada-United States agreement relating to the establishment of the Roosevelt Campobello International Park in 1964. The RCIPC is composed of three members appointed by the Government of Canada, and three appointed by the U.S. government. Each government also appoints three alternate members.
Current Canadian members are Edward L.D. McLean, Chair, (Saint John, New Brunswick) and Fred Nicholson, Q.C. (St. Stephen, New Brunswick). The Canadian alternate members are Sandra L. Irving (Saint John, New Brunswick), Ann McCain Evans (Toronto, Ontario) and the Honourable Michael A. Meighen, Q.C., (Toronto, Ontario).
Canada and the United States share equally in the costs of development, operation and maintenance of the Roosevelt Campobello International Park, located on Campobello Island in southeastern New Brunswick. It is the only park in the world that is owned by the peoples of two countries and administered by a joint commission in their name.
The park’s natural area showcases observation areas, walking trails, scenic beaches, attractive headlands, as well as myriad wildlife in their natural habitat. The park, which celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2014, is an important symbol of Canadian and U.S. friendship, neighbourly relations and binational cooperation.
