May 14, 2015 - Antalya, Turkey - Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada
The Honourable Rob Nicholson, P.C., Q.C., M.P. for Niagara Falls, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today concluded a successful meeting with his NATO counterparts in Antalya, Turkey, where he discussed major international issues affecting global peace and security.
Currently, the alliance is facing new and emerging threats. To the east, Russia’s aggressive militarism and expansionism continue to pose a serious threat. In the Middle East and beyond, the so-called Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) has become a threat not just to regional security but also to many NATO member states, including Canada.
“Three years ago, NATO allies knew that we needed to be ready for new and emerging threats, and today we are well positioned to take on these new threats now facing the alliance, both on the Eastern flank and from the so-called Islamic State of Iraq and Syria. Success can only be achieved through concerted efforts by the international community, and Canada is proud to do its part.”
