Born in Berthier-sur-Mer, Québec, the Honourable Pierre Blais served as the Chief Justice of the Federal Court of Appeals from 2009 to 2014.
Before being appointed to the Federal Court of Appeal in 2008, he served as a Judge of the Federal Court of Canada, Trial Division, an ex officio member of the Court of Appeal and Judge of the Court Martial Appeal Court of Canada since 1998.
Mr. Blais has also held a variety of Cabinet positions including Solicitor General of Canada, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, and President of the Queen’s Privy Council for Canada.
Mr. Blais holds both a Bachelor of Arts and a Licentiate in Laws from the University of Laval. He has also completed a Fellowship at the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies of the University of London in the comparative judicial treatment of national security cases in different legal jurisdictions.
