Prime Minister Stephen Harper spoke today with the President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko. The leaders discussed the situation in eastern Ukraine and the ongoing need to confront Russia’s continuing aggression.
President Poroshenko thanked Canada for the financial and material support provided to Ukraine in recent months, including Canada's participation in upcoming military training exercises. The President also noted the recent capture in Ukraine of two members of the Russian Special Operations Force as further overwhelming evidence of ongoing direct Russian involvement in the illegal invasion and occupation of Ukrainian territory.
Both leaders agreed that the Putin regime's aggression must be met with continued resolve, including the application of economic sanctions and the full implementation of the Minsk agreements.
Prime Minister Harper reiterated Canada’s strong and ongoing support for Ukraine and encouraged the President in his ongoing efforts to fight corruption.
