Fort Walsh celebrates its 140th anniversary throughout the summer
June 22, 2015 – Fort Walsh National Historic Site, Saskatchewan – Parks Canada
David Anderson, Member of Parliament, Cypress Hills-Grasslands, on behalf of the Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, Minister of the Environment and Minister responsible for Parks Canada, today highlighted the upcoming 2015 visitor season programming at Fort Walsh National Historic Site. The North West Mounted Police (NWMP) post was first built in 1875 in Fort Walsh and they will be marking its 140th anniversary throughout the summer.
July will be jam-packed with a number of family-friendly events, including the 5 km Rotgut Run on Saturday July 11, and the RCMP Musical Ride on July 21. Trades Day is August 8 and offers a wide variety of activities including wagon rides, cannon and rifle firing, Métis dancing and historic trades demonstrations.
There is a variety of ways to explore the site, from walking through the Fort buildings, to learning about how trading worked at the Métis cabins, to discovering a new walking trail through the picturesque Cypress Hills. Visitors are invited to experience this living 1870s fort and discover how Canadian law was brought to the West. Be part of a court room trial and experience life over 100 years ago with guides in period costume. Step back in time with daily activities at the new Métis cabin and trading post located next to the fort and indulge in tasty treats at the food tent.
Fort Walsh National Historic Site is open five days a week, Tuesday to Saturday, in May and June. The site will be open seven days a week from July 1 to September 1, and Tuesday through Saturday in September.
