Canadian Army troops return from Operation REASSURANCE

OTTAWA — Approximately 100 Canadian Army soldiers returned to Petawawa, Ontario, today following their participation in Operation REASSURANCE, which is part of Canada’s response to the Putin regime’s aggression in Ukraine.

Cheryl Gallant, Member of Parliament for Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke, was in Petawawa to greet the soldiers as they arrived.

The soldiers are from 2 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group (2 CMBG) based in Petawawa and the majority have been deployed since early 2015. The remaining 2 CMBG members, approximately 90 soldiers, will return in the following weeks.

During their deployment, soldiers participated in various training opportunities—such as Exercises LANCER STRIKE in Poland, SARMIS in Romania, and SUMMER SHIELD in Latvia—to further develop and enhance interoperability, readiness, joint operations capabilities and multinational responses to potential crises.
These training opportunities ensure NATO is able to react effectively and in a timely manner to a whole range of possible situations no matter where they might occur.
The Canadian Army benefits from these training opportunities, which allow our soldiers to achieve better interoperability with NATO allies, showcase their capabilities, and further demonstrate their leadership abilities.
The first deployment for 2 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group - part of 4th Canadian Division - on Operation REASSURANCE was in July 2014.
Members of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) have been in Central and Eastern Europe since May 2014, and have participated in collective training exercises and partnership engagements with our allies.
Operation REASSURANCE refers to the Canadian Armed Forces’ activities in support of NATO measures to reassure allies in Central and Eastern Europe. Canada’s land contribution consists of the military capabilities for training, exercises, demonstrations and assigned NATO tasks.
As of this month, 2 CMBG will hand over deployment duties for Operation REASSURANCE to 5 CMBG based in Valcartier, Quebec.
On Sunday, June 28, approximately 90 soldiers from Valcartier deployed to Poland as part of Operation REASSURANCE. Over the next month, a total of approximately 200 soldiers from Valcartier will deploy on the operation.
