The Government of Canada is invested more than $4.5 million for 6 community and business development projects in the Northwest Territories (NWT). Along with support from partners, this investment of over $8.5 million will result in the expansion of local information technology infrastructure, the development of a viable forestry sector, the revitalization of downtown Yellowknife, the expansion of the Gaia Integrative Centre, and the attraction of investment and expansion of local entrepreneurship.

1. The Conseil de développement économique des Territoires du Nord-Ouest (CDÉTNO)
CDÉTNO is undertaking a campaign to target French-speaking populations in Canada as well as markets abroad in an effort to attract investment in key sectors in the Northwest Territories. In addition, CDÉTNO will work at the community level in the Northwest Territories to promote entrepreneurship and local readiness for economic opportunities in key sectors.

2. City of Yellowknife
This project will help the City support programs for business incubation, entrepreneur development and downtown core revitalization. Yellowknife commercial and residential real estate market analysis will help define industry sector trends, their impacts and opportunities to help the City and business sector community prepare for new innovative business development practices. This project supports the objectives of the NWT Economic Opportunities Strategy.

3. NWT Forestry Industry and Biomass Initiative
This project is a partnership between the Government of Canada (CanNor and Natural Resources Canada – Canada Forestry Service) and the Government of the Northwest Territories. It will support creation of a General Development Plan to mobilize the forest industry to develop renewable energy opportunities based on forest biomass. This investment will also support timber supply negotiations with the NWT-based wood pellet manufacturers and help to ensure sufficient supply sustain the industry.

4. Gaia Integrative Centre
Funding support will allow for the expansion and completion of the Gaia Integrative Centre as well as enabling the centre to hire 6 new employees and wellness practitioners, creating new job opportunities in NWT.

5. Sambaa K'e Dene Band (SKDB)
The SKDB Information Technology (IT) system upgrade project will help the community prepare to benefit from increased resource development in the region. The SKDB project is expected to address the needs for a robust IT system and related procedures, training and protocols for the community which will enhance its capacity to engage in economic development opportunities.

6. Yellowknives Dene First Nation (YKDFN)
The objective of this IT upgrade project is to increase the capacity of YKDFN to effectively manage IT infrastructure and improve internal capacity to meet present and emerging opportunities. An upgrade information management system will assist the First Nation in developing organizational functions and interconnect YKDFN offices and departments with a dynamic IT system that meets the current and future needs of the community.

Investment in these projects is made possible through:
- CanNor's Strategic Investments in Northern Economic Development (SINED) program, which focuses on long-term economic growth, economic diversification and capacity-building across the North; and
- CanNor's Northern Aboriginal Economic Opportunities Program (NAEOP), which is intended to increase the participation of northern Aboriginal communities and businesses in economic opportunities.
