Project approved under the Small Communities Fund
June, 23, 2015 - Owen Sound, Ontario – Infrastructure Canada
Georgian College's students, faculty, staff and researchers will benefit from a new Marine Emergency Duties Training and Research Centre thanks to joint funding from the Governments of Canada and Ontario through the Small Communities Fund.
This project will entail the construction of a new Marine Emergency Duties (MED) Training and Research Centre at the Owen Sound Campus of Georgian College. Once completed, the new centre, the only accredited Ontario-based MED centre, will help sustain mandatory post-secondary marine education and training and will enhance the capacity for collaborative applied research within and beyond the marine industry.
The $1-billion Small Communities Fund provides funding for priority public infrastructure projects that deliver on local needs. Canada and Ontario will each provide $272 million to support projects in communities across the province with fewer than 100,000 residents. This funding will help address local priorities, supporting job creation and economic growth, thus sustaining a high quality of life in small communities across Ontario for years to come.
