June 25, 2015 – St. Andrews, Man. – Office of the Minister of the Environment, Parks Canada
James Bezan, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of National Defence and Member of Parliament for Selkirk—Interlake, on behalf of the Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, Minister of the Environment and Minister responsible for Parks Canada, today announced infrastructure investments totalling $14.3 million in several Parks Canada sites across Manitoba.
Specific projects highlighted during the event include restoration and recapitalization work at the heritage railway station that is home to the Parks Canada Visitor Centre in Churchill, Man.; repointing work at Cape Merry Battery, which is part of Prince of Wales Fort National Historic Site in Churchill; and replacement of the water/wastewater system, rehabilitation of heritage buildings and repair of the historic perimeter limestone walls at Lower Fort Garry National Historic Site.
These projects are a significant step in both the protection of these places for the future, and for improving visitor’s experiences. The repointing and wall restoration at Cape Merry Battery and Lower Fort Garry are major steps in the conservation of these national treasures, while the rehabilitation of heritage buildings will enhance protection from fire and seasonal temperature changes. Likewise, rehabilitation efforts to the Big House at Lower Fort Garry will mean that the site’s central historic structure will ensure that Canadians can safely enjoy all this site has to offer.
