Member of Parliament Lawrence Toet announces significant $1.6 million investment for Winnipeg armouries

Funding to improve facilities for Canadian Armed Forces personnel in Winnipeg is possible through the new Federal Infrastructure Investments Program.

WINNIPEG – A new $1.6 million federal infrastructure investment will fund work to renovate and upgrade three Winnipeg-based Armouries.

Member of Parliament Lawrence Toet, on behalf of The Honourable Julian Fantino, Associate Minister of National Defence, today announced a significant investment to improve important infrastructure at the Minto Armoury, McGregor Armoury and at HMCS Chippawa – a Naval Reserve division – to support the Canadian Armed Forces, which will help support the local economy and job creation.

Over the next two years, the project will fund: washroom renovations and new gravel for parking and storage areas at the Minto Armoury; a new dirty-work area at the McGregor Armoury; and roof repairs at HMCS Chippawa.

The federal infrastructure investments, announced by Prime Minister Harper in November 2014, will build and renew infrastructure across the country, creating jobs and economic prosperity for local communities.
The Government estimates that accelerated investments will also support the creation of more than 10,000 jobs in communities, like Winnipeg, across Canada by the end of 2016.
The Department of National Defence has received $452 million for the repair and upgrade of Canadian Armed Forces facilities.
Over the next two years, $135 million will be invested in DND projects involving repairs to roofs, siding, plumbing, and heating and ventilation systems to Armouries across Canada. These projects will improve the efficiency and reduce maintenance costs at these facilities.
This investment will provide updated infrastructure for the men and women of the Royal Winnipeg Rifles, a Primary Reserve infantry regiment of the Canadian Armed Forces, which is headquartered at the Minto Armoury.
The Minto Armoury and the McGregor Armoury are both recognized federal heritage buildings.
Founded in 1883, the Royal Winnipeg Rifles are the premier infantry unit in Manitoba, with a long and proud history dedicated to the service of Canada. The Colonel-in-Chief of the unit is His Royal Highness, Charles, Prince of Wales. The Honorary Colonel of the unit is Dr. Emoke Szathmary, a biological anthropologist and former president and vice-chancellor of the University of Manitoba. The Honorary Lieutenant Colonel is Abdo (Albert) El Tassi, president and CEO of Peerless Garments Ltd.
As part of the Government of Canada’s commitment to ensuring support for Reservists, Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC) recently announced that part-time Reserve Force Veterans will now have access to the same minimum Earnings Loss Benefit as full-time Reserve and Regular Force Veterans. The Earnings Loss Benefit provides eligible veterans who participate in VAC’s Rehabilitation services (or who are unable to be gainfully and suitably employed).
