The Honourable Rob Nicholson, P.C., Q.C., M.P. for Niagara Falls, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today issued the following statement regarding the decision by Hong Kong’s Legislative Council on universal suffrage legislation:
“Canadians, along with their government, have followed Hong Kong’s current political debate very closely. We congratulate the people of Hong Kong on the civility and commitment with which all sides have approached the democratic discussion.
“Canada remains committed to advancing democracy, human rights and the rule of law around the world. Democracy is a deeply held Canadian value and a key Canadian foreign policy priority.
“Given our robust ties, Canada continues to have a strong interest in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. The rule of law and continued good governance of Hong Kong are truly valued by Canada, by Hong Kong’s large Canadian diaspora and business community, and by the people of Hong Kong descent living in Canada.
Canadians hope that a constructive dialogue regarding electoral reform will continue, so as to reflect the democratic aspirations of the Hong Kong people.
“Canada believes that ongoing adherence to the ‘one country, two systems’ policy has contributed and remains essential to Hong Kong’s stability and prosperity.”
