Ministers Kenney and Fantino meet with United States Deputy Secretary of Defense Work

Defence Minister Jason Kenney and Associate Defence Minister Julian Fantino today met with United States (U.S.) Deputy Secretary of Defense (SECDEF) Robert Work, in advance of celebrations marking the 75th anniversary of the Permanent Joint Board on Defence (PJBD).

In their first meeting, Ministers Kenney and Fantino and Deputy SECDEF Work discussed common defence issues and current security challenges facing Canada and the U.S. This includes the North American Aerospace Defence Command (NORAD) and the defence of North America, coalition efforts to fight ISIS in Iraq and Syria, and NATO Assurance Measures.
Both Minister Kenney and Deputy SECDEF Work will deliver keynote addresses tonight at the dinner recognizing the work of the PJBD over the last 75 years, in advance of its 234th meeting tomorrow.
The PJBD is the senior bilateral advisory body on defence cooperation between the United States and Canada. The Board serves as a strategic-level consultative body on matters affecting the defence and security of the northern half of the Western Hemisphere, as well as more global defence and security issues that have implications for North America.
The year 2015 marks the 75th anniversary of the PJBD forum. The Board was established at the inaugural meeting held in Ogdensburg, New York, on August 18, 1940, by Prime Minister King and President Roosevelt. While it is only one of several fora for Canada-U.S. defence cooperation, the PJBD continues to play an important role at the strategic level.
The 234th PJBD meeting, which will take place tomorrow in Ottawa, will cover a broad range of topics on Canada-U.S. defence and security engagement in the Western Hemisphere, as well as our global defence cooperation.
