Ottawa, June 27, 2015 – The Honourable Jason Kenney, Minister for Multiculturalism, and the Honourable Tim Uppal, Minister of State (Multiculturalism) issued the following statement on Canadian Multiculturalism Day:
“Since its proclamation, Canadian Multiculturalism Day has given Canadians the opportunity to celebrate Canada’s rich tradition of peaceful pluralism and ordered liberty. It is also a time to remember the contributions of Canadians such as Senator Paul Yuzyk, who championed the cause of Canada as a multicultural nation.
“Throughout our history, Canada has been shaped by those who came to our shores from all around the world and worked hard to build a better life for themselves and their families. Today, Canada is recognized for our successful integration of newcomers of all backgrounds and faith traditions.
“With 2015 designated as the Year of Sport in Canada, we also have an opportunity to celebrate Canada’s diversity through sport, and I encourage all Canadians to learn more about the contributions of our athletes of all cultural backgrounds during the Toronto 2015 Pan Am & Parapan Games and other sporting events throughout the year.
“On this day we encourage all Canadians to celebrate their cultural heritage, and to express appreciation for the values of freedom, democracy and the rule of law that we all enjoy.”
