New Commander for Canadian Joint Operations Command

OTTAWA — Lieutenant-General Stephen Bowes officially assumed command of Canadian Joint Operations Command (CJOC) from Lieutenant-General Jonathan Vance at a ceremony today in Ottawa presided over by General Tom Lawson, Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS).

Quick Facts

With 30 years’ service in the Canadian Armed Forces, Lieutenant-General Stephen Bowes most recently served as Chief of Force Development at National Defence Headquarters in Ottawa. He has also served as Commander of Canadian Army Doctrine and Training Centre, and Deputy Chief of Staff Plans and Projects for the International Security Assistance Force Joint Command Headquarters in Kabul, Afghanistan.
Lieutenant-General Bowes is a Commander of the Order of Military Merit and has been awarded the Meritorious Service Cross, the Meritorious Service Medal, the United States Bronze Star, and a Commander of the Canadian Army Commendation.
Lieutenant-General Jonathan Vance will soon be promoted to the rank of General and appointed as Chief of the Defence Staff.
Canadian Joint Operations Command prepares for and conducts operations to defend Canada, to assist in the defence of North America, and, as directed, to promote peace and security abroad.
