Project possible thanks to federal Gas Tax Fund
June 5, 2015 – Saanich, British Columbia – Infrastructure Canada
A busy section of Cook Street was officially re-opened this week after undergoing a significant makeover. The Cook Street “Complete Street” project consisted of upgrading approximately 900 metres of Cook Street, from the intersection of Quadra Street/Cloverdale Avenue to Maplewood Road.
As part of the Quadra Local Area Plan to create a vibrant neighbourhood, the Cook Street “Complete Street” design contributes to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, improving storm water quality, increasing safety for all commuters and providing an inviting environment for residents.
In addition to new asphalt on the roadway, the project included 1.8 kilometre of new and refurbished sidewalks, the construction of 1.8 kilometre of separated bicycle lanes, new underground municipal utilities, and traffic safety improvements. Over 45 new trees were also planted along the route.
Funding for this $5 million project is being provided by several sources, including $3.2 million from the federal Gas Tax Fund, $2.4 million from the District of Saanich, and $21,000 through a road safety audit by the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia.
