The Government of Canada is the custodian of a broad range of infrastructure and is committed to maintaining and improving infrastructure across the country. Investments in this critical infrastructure are a key element in the Government’s efforts to create jobs, growth and long-term prosperity.
The Atlantic Forestry Centre is a premier federal research facility co-located in Fredericton, New Brunswick, and Corner Brook, Newfoundland and Labrador. Research conducted at the centre focuses on native and alien forest pests, ecosystem-based management, climate change risk and adaptation, forest inventory and wood fibre attributes, and the conservation of forest genetic resources and biodiversity.
The Government of Canada has committed $4.8 million to upgrade the Atlantic Forestry Centre in Fredericton, with several infrastructure investments to the building and laboratories including a new roof, new fume hood exhaust components and an HVAC chiller. These upgrades will ultimately provide greater energy efficiency and cost savings.
The Government of Canada has also committed $1 million to install a geomagnetic calibration facility at the Acadia Research Forest in Noonan, New Brunswick, the Atlantic Forestry Centre’s 10,000 hectare living forest laboratory.
This specialized facility will be used to calibrate equipment in the national geomagnetic observatory network that monitors, forecasts and reports on the earth’s magnetic field and on space weather, which can cause disturbances, including power outages, and disruptions to GPS navigation systems.
