July 2, 2015 - Quebec City - Canada Economic Development for Quebec Regions (CED)
Philippe Couillard, Premier of Quebec, responsible for the Saguenay—Lac-Saint-Jean region and Member of the National Assembly for Roberval, accompanied by the Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of Infrastructure, Communities and Intergovernmental Affairs, Minister of the Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec and Member of Parliament for Roberval—Lac-Saint-Jean, and Laurent Lessard, Quebec’s Minister of Forests, Wildlife and Parks, today announced $19.2 million in investment for restoration work on watercourse crossings on multi-use roads in public wildlife areas of Quebec.
The federal and provincial governments are each investing $9.6 million over three years to encourage the restoration of bridges and culverts damaged by weathering and severe storms.
“Government has to ensure the improvement, rehabilitation and maintenance of these multi-use roads in wildlife areas, whose use has been increasing over time. That is why the Quebec government is investing in restoring these roads on public lands,” the Premier noted. “This agreement between the two levels of government is proof positive of our desire to work together to support regional economic development associated with harnessing natural resource and land development.”
“For the Government of Canada, it is important to maintain access to public lands,” stated Minister Lebel. “This is an essential element in the economic development of the regions. And we want to bring new life to works which, once restored, will increase those lands’ potential to attract tourists. This new initiative is another fine example of federal-provincial co-operation.”
“Through this investment,” Minister Lessard added, “we will be enhancing users’ access to public forest areas. Quebec has some 250,000 km of multi-use roads facilitating such activities as hunting, fishing, vacationing and recreational tourism. As a government, we are investing to provide access to our land, but above all to ensure users’ safety.”
