The following projects will receive a total of up to $8.3 million in support. Funding will be provided through the Government of Canada’s Global Peace and Security Fund, Global Partnership Program, Counter-Terrorism Capacity Building Program and international development assistance.
Expanding the Delivery Capacity for Humanitarian and Development Assistance in Syria
Funding: $3.2 million
The project aims to support the expansion of assistance delivered inside Syria by building the capacity of Syrian civil society organizations and small and medium-sized enterprises to deliver aid to vulnerable communities under stress, improve their management capacity and operational effectiveness through training and mentorship, and increase their access to remote monitoring and evaluation tools.
Building the Capacity of Iraqi Authorities for Mine Action
Funding: up to $1 million
The project aims to provide expert advice and technical support to mine action authorities in Iraq to help mitigate threats relating to mines, explosive remnants of war and improvised explosive devices; improve the effectiveness of threat management operations; and deliver tailored training, mentoring and equipment advice for responses to improvised explosive devices. The goal is to remove the threat of mines, cluster munitions and other explosive remnants of war and facilitate the return of internally displaced people.
Countering Chemical and Biological Weapons Threats
Funding: up to $1 million
The project aims to strengthen the Iraqi government’s capacity to prevent, detect and respond to biological and chemical weapons threats by providing equipment, specialized training and security upgrades.
Lebanese Armed Forces—Preventing ISIS’s Expansion into Lebanon
Funding: up to $750,000
The project aims to provide non-lethal equipment, including personal protective gear, to Lebanese Armed Forces border regiments and outposts to help stem the flow of foreign fighters and illicit goods into and out of Syria, help detect and monitor ISIS’s activity and support defensive capabilities against any ISIS actions along the Syrian-Lebanese frontier.
Non-lethal Equipment for the Jordanian Armed Forces
Funding: up to $1 million
The project will support the Jordanian Armed Forces’ Quick Reaction Force with tactical movement capabilities by providing non-lethal equipment, including vehicles and personal equipment, to enable rapid deployment of forces anywhere in Jordan in the event of a terrorist attack.
Curbing Financial Flows from Africa to ISIS
Funding: up to $1 million
This project aims to enhance the capacity of African authorities to curb money laundering and terrorist financing, focusing on flows to and from ISIS. Law enforcement agencies in targeted countries will be equipped with the skills and knowledge needed to conduct financial investigations and profiling and to freeze, seize or confiscate assets.
Peaceful Coexistence in Nineveh, Iraq, After Liberation
Funding: up to $350,000
The project aims to promote the non-violent return of members of minority communities to Nineveh and establish an agreement among the different tribes of Nineveh to collaborate to build reconciliation, prevent violence and revenge, and promote social cohesion.
