July 11, 2015 – Ottawa, Ontario – Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada
The Honourable Rob Nicholson, P.C., Q.C., M.P. for Niagara Falls, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today issued the following statement:
“Canada is deeply concerned by reports that Thailand has forcibly deported more than 100 people to China—including women and children—who China claims are ethnic Uyghurs.
“Thailand must ensure that all deportations be guided by humanitarian principles, with full respect for the human rights, safety and dignity of all deportees.
“Canada continues to call on Thailand to respect its international human rights obligations, both in the treatment of its own citizens and its treatment of the remaining members of this group in Thailand.
“We further urge China to uphold its domestic and international human rights obligations and to ensure that all people in China are able to live free from intimidation, harassment and persecution.”
