July 24, 2015 – Ottawa, Ontario – Environment Canada
Today, Minister Leona Aglukkaq announced that Canada has joined the Global Alliance for Climate-Smart Agriculture as part of the Government of Canada's ongoing efforts to support increasing sustainable agricultural practices in developing countries.
In 2013, Canada fully delivered on its $1.2-billion funding commitment under the Fast Start Finance Initiative, which supports a range of projects to address climate change throughout the developing world. More than $67 million of that amount specifically went toward projects with a strong focus on sustainable agricultural in Africa, South America, the Caribbean and Asia.
The Alliance, which was launched at the United Nations Secretary General's Climate Summit in September 2014, will work to promote greater international engagement on agriculture and food security while focusing efforts on reducing greenhouse gas emissions associated with farming.
