July 4, 2015 - Ottawa, Ontario - Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada
The Honourable Rob Nicholson, P.C., Q.C., M.P. for Niagara Falls, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today issued the following statement:
“Canada welcomes the imposition of sanctions by the United Nations Security Council on six South Sudanese individuals for helping to fuel the 18-month conflict in South Sudan. This conflict has resulted in the deaths of thousands of people and the displacement of more than 2 million others.
“Canada remains deeply disturbed by the UN Mission in South Sudan’s reports of the widespread abductions, sexual abuse and the horrific killings of women and girls. We call on the Government of South Sudan to put an end to this appalling violence and hold the perpetrators accountable. The Government of South Sudan must ensure safe passage for humanitarian assistance, so it can reach those most in need.”
