Expansion made possible by ongoing support from federal, provincial and municipal governments
July 8, 2015 Medicine Hat, Alberta– Infrastructure Canada
LaVar Payne, Member of Parliament for Medicine Hat, joined Mayor Ted Clugston and city staff at Medicine Hat's Family Leisure Centre to witness the progress being made in the comprehensive expansion project.
Located in the northwest part of the city, the Family Leisure Centre has been a hub of sports and recreation for the entire community since May 2000. The expansion of the existing Centre is adding many new features, like the construction of an indoor field house with twin playing surfaces, as well as a multi-purpose gymnasium that can accommodate two full-sized basketball courts or four full-sized volleyball courts.
A new synthetic turf for the Methanex Bowl was completed in September 2013. Spectator seating, a press box and change room facilities will soon be installed for the Methanex Bowl football field.
Construction at the Family Leisure Centre is expected to be completed by June 2016.
"I'm very pleased at the progress being made at the Family Leisure Centre here in Medicine Hat. Supporting communities through facilities like this is just one of the ways our Government encourages Albertans, and all Canadians, to lead healthier, more active lives. We have made unprecedented investments in Canada's infrastructure since 2006 and we are proud to invest in important infrastructure projects, such as this one, as we focus on creating jobs, promoting growth, and building strong, prosperous communities across Canada."
