Discussion focused on Canada’s contribution to the fight against ISIS
July 31, 2015
OTTAWA – Defence Minister Jason Kenney today met with the Foreign Affairs Minister of Iraq, Dr. Ibrahim al-Jaafari in Ottawa. They participated in a wreath-laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier located at the National War Memorial. The two ministers also discussed Operation IMPACT, the Canadian Armed Forces’ (CAF) contribution to Global Coalition efforts to fight against the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS).
During the discussion, Minister Kenney reiterated Canada’s commitment to help the Iraqi forces fight against ISIS and to deny this terrorist group safe havens in Iraq or Syria. Minister al-Jaafari also provided Minister Kenney with an update on the impact of Coalition operations in support of Iraqi forces fighting ISIS, as well as the devastation ISIS is causing to Iraqi civilians, including ethnic and religious minorities.
“Canada is concerned about the ongoing danger that ISIS presents. We will stand by the Government and the people of Iraq in the effort to stem the tide of this genocidal group, which threatens the Iraqi people, has caused millions of religious minorities to flee their homes, and has even threatened Canadians with harm.”
