July 20, 2015 – Georgetown, PE – Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency
A group of community members, business leaders and government representatives have collaborated to provide solid leadership to develop Georgetown, PEI’s tourism potential. Today, the Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, on behalf of the Honourable Rob Moore, Minister of State (ACOA), announced funding to support Destination Georgetown Peninsula as the community-based group moves forward with its plans.
Over the past year, Georgetown has been working on a plan to build on its potential as a tourism destination and guide its future development. The town recently participated in ACOA’s Strategic Tourism Expansion Program (STEP), which identified the cruise market of small/luxury cruise ships and adventure and expedition cruise lines as a key tourism priority.
Destination Georgetown Peninsula is now developing a plan for the town that will further explore and build on the potential of the scenic waterfront community. Promoting Georgetown as an “off the beaten path” destination, the group is working on a visual design plan, a welcome kiosk, and a number of marketing activities with the overall goal of increasing tourism visitation to the town by land and sea and growing local businesses.
Quick Facts:
- The Government of Canada, through ACOA’s Business Development Program, provided a $36,500 contribution for this project.
- Destination Georgetown Peninsula is a non-profit organization with a mandate to develop a strong and unified plan for tourism and economic growth in Georgetown and the surrounding area. The group operates through an eleven-member board of directors.
- The Town of Georgetown sits on an eight-kilometre peninsula formed by the Cardigan and Brudenell Rivers. The town’s centre is located on the waterfront, which offers the deepest natural port in Prince Edward Island.
