ENERGY STAR®, a government-backed international symbol of energy efficiency, identifies products and homes as high-efficiency performers in their category, helping consumers easily identify and select energy-efficient products to save them money and reduce energy use.
Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) administers the use of the ENERGY STAR® mark in Canada through an Administrative Agreement with the Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy.
ENERGY STAR® in Canada is a voluntary arrangement between Natural Resources Canada and organizations that manufacture, sell or promote products and homes that meet ENERGY STAR® levels of energy performance.
Energy efficiency measures are helping Canadian consumers and businesses reduce energy use and save on their energy costs while helping reduce Canada’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. In fact, almost 90 percent of Canadian consumers have said that ENERGY STAR® helps them make better choices about energy use.
The International Energy Agency ranked Canada second for its rate of energy-efficiency improvements between 1990 and 2010. The improvements made over this period meant that Canadians saved more than $32 billion and avoided more than 93 megatonnes in greenhouse gas emissions. Federal government’s energy-efficiency programs and strong collaboration with the provinces and territories have been an important part of Canada’s success.
ENERGY STAR®-Certified Products
ENERGY STAR®-certified products must meet or exceed the energy-efficiency criteria in the ENERGY STAR® specification for each product. Products must be tested in labs and verified by certification bodies approved by the government, and registered with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency or with NRCan.
The ENERGY STAR® program in Canada includes products across more than 70 product categories ranging from lighting to home electronics, major appliances, heating, ventilating and air-conditioning equipment, ceiling fans, office equipment and other products.
For a list of products that can qualify to use the ENERGY STAR® mark, visit the NRCan Web site.
ENERGY STAR®-Qualified Homes
ENERGY STAR®-qualified new homes must meet or exceed technical requirements for energy efficiency set in the ENERGY STAR® for New Homes Standard. Only builders licensed by NRCan may label homes with the ENERGY STAR®-qualified home label.
