The Department of National Defence has received $452 million for the repair and upgrade of Canadian Armed Forces facilities. Revitalized defence infrastructure across Canada will provide the Canadian Armed Forces with the facilities they need to support to troops, military families and Reserve forces, as well as to support operations at home and abroad, and to ensure the health and safety of our men and women in uniform.
The Department of National Defence has identified an opportunity to perform a number of improvements at its aging armouries across Canada. Over the next two years, $135 million will be invested in projects involving repairs to roofs, siding, plumbing, and heating and ventilation systems.
The Armoury, located at 144 King St. East in Brockville, was built from 1900 to 1901. It is a Recognized Federal Heritage Building because of its historical association, and its architectural and environmental values. The building is associated with the military reform policies of Robert Borden, Minister of Militia and Defence, at the time. Sir Robert Borden was later Prime Minister of Canada, from 1911 to 1920. The Armoury, designed in the Romanesque revival style, is a very good example of the drill halls built between 1896 and 1918. It was constructed in stone rather than the more typical brick drill halls that followed. The Armoury has a strong environmental value by reinforcing the residential context of the downtown core and is familiar to local residents and to those visiting the building.
The Armoury is home to the Brockville Rifles. This regiment is one of 15 units which belong to 33 Canadian Brigade Group, of the 4th Canadian Division (4 Cdn Div), Canada’s Army in Ontario. The 4 Cdn Div is comprised of nearly 12,000 Regular and Reserve members. The regiment was founded in the 1860s as a result of the Fenian Threat in Ontario, Quebec and Manitoba. As a unit of the Primary Reserve, The Brockville Rifles trains to conduct domestic operations in support of civil authorities. The unit also provides individual augmentees to support domestic and international operations conducted by the Regular Force.
Troops of the regiment saw battle in France during the Great War and in North-West Europe, and Germany during the Second World War. The regiment also contributed volunteer troops to operations in Bosnia, the Former Republic of Georgia, and in Afghanistan between 2002 and 2014.
