The Government of Canada's National Anti-Drug Strategy contributes to safer and healthier communities by helping prevent use, treat dependency and reduce production and distribution of illicit drugs. In 2014, the Strategy was expanded to include measures to address prescription drug abuse in Canada.
Through the Strategy, the Health Portfolio invests approximately $130 million a year to address addictions and drug abuse in Canada. The Strategy includes the Anti-Drug Strategy Initiatives (ADSI), a merger of the former Drug Strategy Community Initiatives Fund and the Drug Treatment Funding Program, administered by Health Canada. The ADSI provides funding to provincial, territorial governments and other key stakeholders to develop innovative approaches that strengthen and improve substance abuse treatment systems across Canada.
Through the ADSI, the Government of Canada has announced close to $24 million over two years (2014-2016) for 14 drug treatment initiatives aimed at improving treatment systems which will help individuals living with drug addictions and their families through the recovery process.
