July 30, 2015 –Winnipeg, Manitoba – Infrastructure Canada
Joyce Bateman, Member of Parliament for Winnipeg South Centre was joined today by the Honourable Drew Caldwell, Minister of Municipal Government and Member of the Legislative Assembly for Brandon East and Brian Bowman, Mayor of Winnipeg to jointly announce federal-provincial funding of up to $91,800,000 for the Waverley Street Underpass at CN Mainline under the New Building Canada Plan.
This project involves the construction of a new railway underpass on Waverley Street, where Waverley Street meets the CN Mainline; the reconstruction of Waverley Street between Wilkes and Taylor Avenues; improvements to three intersections along Waverley Street and the twinning of a section of approximately 1.2 kilometres of Taylor Avenue. Additionally active transportation and pedestrian systems within the project area will be improved and expanded. This work will help reduce traffic congestion and improve safety for commuters, cyclists and pedestrians in this busy area of Winnipeg.
The New Building Canada Plan is the largest and longest federal infrastructure plan in Canada's history.
This unprecedented commitment is providing $53 billion to support provincial, territorial and municipal infrastructure, between 2014 and 2024.
Over this ten-year period, Manitoba will benefit from approximately $1.2 billion in dedicated federal funding, including almost $467 million under the Provincial Territorial Infrastructure Component of the New Building Canada Fund.
