July 6, 2015 – Mallorytown, Ontario – Office of the Minister of the Environment, Parks Canada
Gord Brown, Member of Parliament for Leeds—Grenville, on behalf of the Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, Minister of the Environment and Minister responsible for Parks Canada, today announced infrastructure investments totalling $7.7 million in Thousand Islands National Park in Ontario.
This major investment involves significant work recapitalizing the day use areas and visitor facilities to help deliver superior visitor experiences while demonstrating Parks Canada’s world leadership in conservation. This work will enable the park to become more accessible to the 11 million urban Canadians living within a 4-hour drive. Travellers who don’t own a boat had limited access to the park. Renewal of the park’s offer will facilitate visits from non-boaters, both on land and to the islands. Thousand Islands National Park will use this investment to develop a selection of camping and recreational options that meet the demands of Canadians today and into the future.
These projects are the result of an unprecedented investment by the Government of Canada to support infrastructure work in our national historic sites, national parks and national marine conservation areas. This investment represents the largest federal infrastructure plan in the 104-year history of Parks Canada, ensuring these cherished places are protected and secured for the future while also creating and protecting jobs and opportunities.
