Harper Government Investment Enhances Tourism and Supports Jobs and Growth in Northeastern Ontario

Member of Parliament Jay Aspin (Nipissing—Timiskaming), on behalf of the Honourable Greg Rickford, Canada's Minister of Natural Resources and Minister for the Federal Economic Development Initiative for Northern Ontario (FedNor), announced today an investment to enhance tourism, support growth and diversify the economy of Northeastern Ontario.

A FedNor investment of $24,615 will enable the Discovery Routes Trails Organization to develop a feasibility study and implementation plan for the Voyageur Cycling Route, a 400-kilometre trail network that would connect Sudbury to the Ottawa Valley. Designed to position the region as a premier cycling destination, this initiative will help determine the viability of establishing a trail system that would become part of the province's cycling network.

The Discovery Routes Trails Organization is a not-for-profit group that promotes the development, management, use and preservation of an integrated, multi-use trail network in Northeastern Ontario.
The funding announced today is provided through FedNor's Northern Ontario Development Program, which supports projects that promote sustainable community economic development, enhance business development and growth, and facilitate innovation.
Since 2006, through FedNor's Northern Ontario Development Program, the Government of Canada has invested $351 million in support of more than 1,675 projects. These investments have supported more than 22,700 jobs throughout Northern Ontario.
