Senator Fabian Manning announces projects to improve safety and working conditions for harbour users
July 15, 2015 - Harbour Breton, Newfoundland and Labrador
Senator Fabian Manning, on behalf of the Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, announced today that the Government of Canada will invest in major improvement projects at eleven small craft harbours in Newfoundland and Labrador. Funding will provide a safer and more efficient working environment for fishermen and harbour users across the province.
Federal funding of up to $17.6 million is being allocated to harbour improvement projects at the following eleven harbours over the next two years:
- Harbour Breton – wharf reconstruction and breakwater construction
- Belleoram – wharf construction
- Comfort Cove – wharf construction and shore protection construction
- Conne River – wharf construction
- Happy Adventure – wharf reconstruction
- Hermitage – wharf reconstruction
- Joe Batt’s Arm – breakwater wharf reconstruction
- La Scie – wharf construction
- Lumsden – wharf reconstruction
- Pool’s Cove – wharf construction
- Twillingate – small boat basin development
All projects are expected to be completed by March 2017.
Since 2006, the Government of Canada has provided an unprecedented level of funding to support investments in public infrastructure across the country. Last fall, Prime Minister Harper announced an additional investment of $5.8 billion over the next two years to build and renew infrastructure across the country to support Canadian heritage, First Nations education, defence, borders, research, small craft harbours, transportation and search and rescue. As part of this funding, Fisheries and Oceans Canada and the Canadian Coast Guard will receive a total of approximately $551 million. This includes $288 million for harbour improvements at small craft harbours.
“For generations, hard-working Canadian men and women have made their livelihood from our waters. Without question, small craft harbours are the cornerstone of the commercial fishing industry. Today’s announcement is part of our Government’s ongoing commitment to support harbours, local economies and foster job creation.”
The Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans
“Since 2006, our Government has continuously made major investments that create opportunities for Canadians and encourage the prosperity of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians. We are pleased to continue to support the hardworking people of Harbour Breton and its surrounding communities. As always, our Government will continue to ensure safe and efficient working conditions for those who earn their livelihood at these harbours.”
Senator Fabian Manning
“Safe, modern, accessible marine infrastructure is critical to fishing and aquaculture communities on the Connaigre Peninsula. I am extremely pleased that the federal government is investing in this important part of the economy in our area. Our harbour, and other harbours in the Coast of Bays, will reap the benefits for years to come from this announcement today.”
