July 16th, 2015 Longue-Pointe-de-Mingan (Québec) Parks Canada
The Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of the Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec and Minister of Infrastructure, Communities and Intergovernmental Affairs, and the Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, Minister of the Environment and Minister responsible for Parks Canada, today announced the completion of rehabilitation work at the île aux Perroquets lighthouse station. It is an investment of about $3 million by the Government of Canada on a project totalling nearly $4.5 million.
The work carried out in collaboration with the Corporation de l’Île aux Perroquets helped restore the facilities to their former state. The interior and exterior of the lighthouse, the keeper's house, the assistant's house, the foghorn building, the henhouse, the provision storage building and the chaffaud were restored. The improvements made will allow visitors to immerse themselves in the lightkeepers' history.
As a result of the investments by the Government of Canada, the Auberge de l'île aux Perroquets, managed by the Corporation de l’Île aux Perroquets, will be able to accommodate visitors in a lighthouse station that would have made the guardians of yesteryear proud. In addition to an exhibit on the history of the lighthouse station, Parks Canada will offer guided tours.
Initiatives like these are concrete actions that bring Canadians closer to historic sites and nature, and demonstrate the importance given to Canada’s National Conservation Plan by the Government.
