In November 2014, the Department of National Defence received $452 million for the repair and upgrade of Canadian Armed Forces facilities. Revitalized defence infrastructure across Canada will provide the Canadian Armed Forces with the facilities they need to support troops, military families and Reserve forces, as well as support operations at home and abroad, and to ensure the health and safety of our men and women in uniform.
The Department of National Defence has identified an opportunity to perform a number of improvements at its Armouries across Canada. Over the next two years, DND will invest $135 million in projects to repair roofs, siding, plumbing, and heating and ventilation systems.
The Government estimates that accelerated investments will also support the creation of more than 10,000 jobs in Moose Jaw, Regina and other communities across Canada by the end of 2016.
15 Wing Moose Jaw is known as the “Home of Military Pilot Training”. The Wing provides training grounds for the NATO Flying Training in Canada program, 2 Canadian Forces Flying Training School, as well as the world-famous Canadian Forces Snowbirds. This is why it is critical that the airfield remain in good condition. A $1.8 million project to do a comprehensive assessment of the airfield drainage system and identify and execute the required repairs will be completed by mid 2017.
At 15 Wing, $6.0 million has been allocated for renovations to existing residential housing units (RHUs) over the next two years, which includes funding for construction costs and other project-associate expenses. The majority of RHUs within DND’s portfolio were built between 1948 and 1960 and require modernization. The Department is continually upgrading its building systems, building envelops and interiors to make the RHUs more energy efficient, comfortable and suitable for the occupants.
The Regina Garrison Armoury is home to the Royal Regina Rifles, a unit of 38 Canadian Brigade Group. Constructed in the early 1920’s, regular maintenance and repairs are required to keep the building in good condition. A $2.7 project for the armoury will include roof replacement, ceiling repairs, the extension of the garage, and exterior brickwork.
