Revitalized defence infrastructure across Canada will provide the Canadian Armed Forces with the facilities they need to provide support to troops and military families, to support the Reserve forces, to support operations home and abroad, and to ensure the health and safety of our men and women in uniform. At 14 Wing Greenwood, seven projects to repair and upgrade infrastructure will be completed over the next two years.
Taxiway and Apron
The taxiway and apron are key components of an airfield. Ensuring that aircraft can manoeuvre safely, and be stored properly is crucial. At 14 Wing Greenwood, both the taxiway and apron have reached the end of their life cycle, and repairs to mill and overlay (a process of removing a layer of asphalt, and then laying down new asphalt) will ensure that this infrastructure meets operational requirements. The overall project is valued at $2.8 million, which includes the planning and design work, construction and project management.
Hangar Door Repairs and Electrical Systems Upgrade
At Hangar 9, the doors have reached the end of their life-cycle and require repairs, which include rails and roller replacements, as well as electrical systems upgrades. Hangar 9 is a critical facility which supports the operations of Search and Rescue, Maritime Patrols, as well as maintenance and operational requirements of the Wing.
The overall project is valued at $1.1 million, which includes planning and design work, construction and project management.
Asbestos Remediation
At 14 Wing, asbestos will be removed in three buildings at the Greenwood Gardens Arena. The asbestos materials will be removed and the buildings will be closed during the work period.
Until the 1980s, asbestos was commonly used by the housing industry in materials such as shingles, felt for roofing, exterior siding, compounds and cement.
Road and Walkway Maintenance
This project will provide maintenance and repairs to roadways, parking lots and walkways. At 14 Wing, severe winter weather has led to cracks or holes in the asphalt surfaces, which will deteriorate over time. The overall project is valued at $2.8 million, which includes planning and design work, construction and project management.
Preparation, such as definition and design work was completed in June 2015. Repairs will occur in two different phases, during the summer months: August 2015 to October 2015, and May 2016 to October 2016.
Fire Suppression and Fire Alarm Repairs
The current fire suppression and fire alarm systems have reached the end of their life expectancy. Specifically, two fire pumps need to be replaced entirely. A fire pump is part of a building’s overall fire suppression system; it provides water supply and pressure to sprinkler and suppression systems.
At 14 Wing, the replacement pumps will support the foam deluge system for two Hangars (a system which disperses a large amount of foam from the ceiling of the Hangar in the event of a fire); as well as the fire suppression system for the mission support area of the Wing. The overall project is valued at $2.3 million, which includes planning and design work, construction and project management.
Military Housing – Quarters on Base
In order to ensure that the military quarters on base meet all accommodation standards, renovations will be completed over the next two years. The overall project is valued at $1 million, which includes design work, construction and project management.
Military Housing – Residential Housing Units
The majority of residential housing units (RHUs) within DND’s portfolio were built between 1948 and 1960 and require modernization. The Department is continually upgrading its building systems, building envelops and interiors to make the RHUs more energy efficient, comfortable and suitable for the occupants.
At 14 Wing Greenwood, $8 million dollars has been allocated for renovations to existing RHUs over the next two years, which includes funding for construction costs and other project-associated expenses, such as design, project management costs and delivery.
