The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) is pleased to share a sample of its second quarter highlights (April - June) from its various operations in Winnipeg, including airport, commercial and inland operations. This sampling underscores the CBSA’s commitment to keeping communities safe and ensuring our laws are respected.
From April to June, CBSA officers in Winnipeg made 11 suspected narcotics seizures including over 115 grams of suspected marijuana, and 514 dosages of suspected steroids and controlled substances:
In this quarter, officers intercepted four separate shipments containing substances suspected to be the steroid dehydroepiandroterone, commonly known as DHEA. These substances were destined for various addresses Alberta and Winnipeg and the packages were declared as different types of supplements. The matter is currently under investigation.
On June 19, CBSA officers at Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson International Airport seized four grams of suspected loose marijuana, as well as over 92 grams of cookies and candies infused with suspected marijuana from a 38-year-old California man. The man was arrested and turned over to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police
There were five seizures of prohibited weapons this quarter by Winnipeg CBSA officers, including a pistol crossbow declared as camping equipment and two replica firearms declared as toys; all destined for Manitoba addresses. Officers also prevented two large swords and two brass knuckles from reaching a Winnipeg address, and 12 throwing stars for an Edmonton address.
From April to June, officers at the Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson International Airport refused entry to 12 foreign nationals for previous criminal records. In one case, on June 30, a 28-year-old man from Tennessee was refused entry when CBSA officers discovered the man had a serious criminal record for theft over $5,000.
Many other U.S. residents were refused entry for past criminality, including:
- a 30-year-old U.S. man for burglary, vehicular assault and reckless driving, possession of illegal weapon (June 4)
- a 45-year old U.S. man for serious criminality for drug trafficking (June 9)
- a 37-year-old U.S. male convicted for battery and a violation of a protection order to protect from abuse (May 18)
- a 47-year-old U.S. man with two convictions for battery, with history of two previous charges of driving under the influence (DUI) and an existing DUI with an outstanding warrant in the state of Idaho (April 27)
- Officers also refused entry to four other travellers for previous DUI convictions
Quick Facts for April to June 2015:
- There were 68,798 travellers and 1,234 flights; and 86,762 commercial shipments for Winnipeg.
- Officers completed 69 permanent resident landings, and issued 336 work permits and 42 study permits.
- CBSA enforcement officers in Winnipeg successfully removed 25 foreign nations with serious criminality convictions, including sexual assault and fraud, to their countries of citizenship.
- Winnipeg CBSA officers granted 12 travellers temporary resident permits.
