Through funding from Natural Resources Canada’s Investments in Forest Industry Transformation (IFIT) program, Uniboard Canada Inc. is aiming to implement a microwave preheating device to increase the production of medium density fibreboard (MDF) by 20 percent at its factory in Mont-Laurier, Quebec.
The device uses magnetrons that generate microwaves to increase the temperature of the fibre mat prior to pressing. This temperature gain immediately prior to pressing reduces the cooking times required to manufacture the fiberboard.
The Investments in Forest Industry Transformation (IFIT) program was first introduced in Canada’s Jobs and Growth Budget 2010 to help secure a more prosperous future for Canada’s forest industry and the communities that depend on it.
The Government of Canada’s Economic Action Plan 2014 committed $90.4 million over four years to recapitalize the IFIT program in support of the ongoing renewal of Canada’s forest sector.
This project aligns with the goals of the Investments in Forest Industry Transformation program through the demonstration of a new innovative technology in Canada’s forest sector.
