Funding to improve facilities for Canadian Armed Forces personnel in Canada is possible through the new Federal Infrastructure Investments Program
July 9, 2015
NEW WESTMINSTER, B.C. — The Honourable Kerry-Lynne D. Findlay, Minister of National Revenue and Member of Parliament for Delta-Richmond East, on behalf of the Honourable Julian Fantino, Associate Minister of National Defence, today announced an investment of $866,000 for renovations at the New Westminster Armoury, in support of the Canadian Armed Forces. This project will also help support the local economy and boost job creation in New Westminster.
The $866,000 federal infrastructure project will take place over the next two years and includes exterior and interior repairs and renovations, such as the perimeter fence, drainage system, lighting upgrades, floor replacement, as well as renovations to the mess and washroom facilities. Work is scheduled to begin this summer.
The Armoury, built in 1896, is an impressive white wooden building of the Richardsonian Romanesque architectural style. It is home to the Royal Westminster Regiment, whose soldiers saw more combat than any other Canadian fighting unit during the Second World War.
The Royal Westminster Regiment, formed in 1910, is an Army Reserve infantry unit of the 39 Canadian Brigade Group (39 CBG). The 39 CBG is the largest Army formation in British Columbia, with 11 units throughout the province. The Brigade is a force generator that recruits, trains and retains Reserve soldiers and leaders in support of domestic and international operations.
