July 29, 2015 - Québec City, Quebec - Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada
The Honourable Rob Nicholson, P.C., Q.C., M.P. for Niagara Falls, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today announced an additional $8 million to address sexual and gender-based violence in conflict.
The campaign to end sexual and gender-based violence in conflict is a priority for the Government of Canada. Violence against women and girls, in particular, is one of the most prevalent human rights abuses in the world. It has a far-reaching impact, affecting survivors not only physically but psychologically and socially, and is a risk factor for other physical and mental health problems. Violence against women undermines the ability of women to participate in rebuilding their communities and livelihoods in the aftermath of armed conflict.
Minister Nicholson underscored Canada’s commitment to protecting women and girls from sexual and gender-based violence during a bilateral meeting in Québec City with Zainab Hawa Bangura, UN Under-Secretary-General and Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Sexual Violence in Conflict.
