The Honourable Rob Nicholson, P.C., Q.C., M.P. for Niagara Falls, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today announced additional Canadian support for efforts to end child, early and forced marriage around the world. Canada will invest more than $2.3 million in a Commonwealth of Learning project to promote secondary schooling and skills development training for girls and women in Commonwealth countries through open learning and distance education.
The project builds on Canada’s international advocacy efforts to prevent child, early and forced marriage by working in Commonwealth countries to promote secondary schooling for girls and women and provide them with skills development training to improve their livelihoods.
The Minister also announced a new $8-million envelope over two years to support local-level community groups, non-governmental organizations, civil society organizations and local governments around the world in their programming efforts to end child, early and forced marriage. This funding will be administered by Canadian missions around the world, through the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives, to ensure that organizations working at the local level have the support they need to continue making a difference in their communities.
The Honourable Kerry-Lynne D. Findlay, P.C., Q.C., M.P. for Delta-Richmond East, Minister of National Revenue, also announced today that Canada will renew more than $7.8 million in funding for the Commonwealth of Learning over the next three years.
